Freddie “Poppy” Dickey

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

Fredrick “Freddie” Russell Dickey went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy, Virginia. He was 70 years old.

Freddie was a resident of Buchanan county all his life. He grew up in Harman and later moved to Happy Hollow in 2004. He was a Lance CRPL in the Marine Corps from 1970-72. Even though he was a Marine during the height of war in Vietnam, he luckily avoided seeing battle by being assigned as a type writer for most of his duration in the Corps. He often said that “knowing how to type probably saved his life.” After the Corps, Freddie worked as a train engineer at N&S for 35 years before he retired in 2008. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, hunter, gun enthusiast, and motorcyclist. Freddie was known and loved by many and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Freddie was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvia and Elliot Dickey; his mother and father-in-law, Louisa and Roscoe O'Quinn; sister-in-law, Connie Dickey; brothers-in-law, Bill Owens, Eddie O'Quinn, and Jim Wallace; nephew, Jason O'Quinn; and his beloved dog, Maggie Mae. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy “DD” Dickey; sister, Regina “Giner” Belcher; and brothers, Larry and Danny (Lonna) Dickey. He is also survived by his nieces, Jennifer “JD” (Josh) Werling, Heather (Scott) Anderson, and Selena Dickey, Pam (Bode) Fultz, Jennifer (Scott) Honaker, and Michele (Brad) Tousignant; nephews, Jeff “Puff” (Jennifer) Owens, Shawn Coppins, and Cody O'Quinn, a whole host of great nieces and nephews; special friend, Suzie Matney; one special niece whom he considered a daughter, Nicole “Poo” Stiltner and her husband, Brandon whom he considered his son-in-law; and his grandchildren, Fredrick Chase “Lil’ Fred” “Bozo” Stiltner and Piper “Lil’ Sybbie” “Bite-Bite” Stiltner. Freddie was a member of the Harman Freewill Baptist Church.

The wake service will be open to the public at Harman Memorial Baptist Church on Friday, March 4, 2022, with visitation from 4 until 6 p.m. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Harman Memorial Baptist Church, the burial will follow at O'Quinn-Deel cemetery in Greenbrier, Va. Wake and funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Shae Sharder.
