IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia Gray
Berry Smeltzer
October 5, 1936 – February 26, 2026
Sylvia Gray Berry Smeltzer, age 89, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026.
Born October 5, 1936, Sylvia was the cherished daughter of William G. Berry and Nell C. Berry.
Sylvia was a much-loved daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a gracious hostess and thoughtful gift giver who found great joy in opening her home to family and friends. Holidays, church gatherings, and family celebrations were hosted with enthusiasm and warmth. Nothing made her happier than seeing loved ones arrive at her home.
An avid gardener, Sylvia carefully tended both vegetable and flower gardens, generously sharing the fruits of her labor—fresh food and beautiful blooms—with many grateful recipients. As a devoted farmer's wife, she faithfully worked alongside her husband, often taking on the tasks no one else wanted, never complaining and always serving as Ken's steadfast companion.
In addition to her work on the farm, Sylvia dedicated 30 years to the Washington County, Virginia Public School System as a secretary and bookkeeper. She spent her first fourteen years at Cleveland Elementary School, where she formed some of her fondest memories and lasting friendships.
Sylvia was a born-again Christian and a faithful member of Cleveland Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she served as a teacher, leader, and mentor. Her faith was the foundation of her life. After the loss of her beloved Ken, her spirit longed to be reunited with him. As one great-grandchild beautifully expressed, "Grandma has graduated to Heaven." We take comfort in knowing she is now in Heaven with her cherished husband.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Kenneth E. Smeltzer; her parents; and her brother, David King Berry.
Sylvia is survived by her loving daughters, Michele Pennings (Simon) and Darlene Becker (Keith); her treasured grandchildren, Mark Wright (Jenna), Wendy Reaves (Jake), Amy Alvis (Aaron), and Andy Becker (fiancée, Jenna); and her precious great-grandchildren, William Wright, Alex Wright, and Sophia Alvis. She is also survived by her brothers, Robert Berry and John Berry, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of English Meadows Abingdon and Caris Hospice for the loving care Sylvia received during her final days.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Cleveland Presbyterian Church from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. with funeral service to follow at 12:00 P.M. with Pastor Rick Laney and Pastor Tom Musselman officiating. Committal service will follow at Cleveland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Keith Becker, Simon Pennings, Mark Wright, Andy Becker, Jake Reaves, and Ben Berry.
Honorary pallbearers will include Aaron Alvis, William Wright, and Alex Wright.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cleveland Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Cemetery, or Cleveland Community Center 18076 Cleveland Church Rd Abingdon, Virginia 24211.
Sylvia's legacy of faith, devotion, hospitality, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
