Obituary

Phillip Edmund Wimmer, 79, of Glade Spring, Virginia, passed away on March 4, 2026.

Phillip was born on August 2, 1946, to the late Noah and Evelyn Wimmer. He spent much of his life doing the things he loved most working with his hands, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the outdoors.

Phillip was a proud U.S. Marine and served two tours in Vietnam. He later worked for many years in the paint and body shop industry and had a lifelong love of antique cars and motorsports. He especially enjoyed watching NASCAR and drag racing. In his spare time, he loved traveling, gardening, photography, and browsing the internet and catalogs for his next interesting find. Phillip was also a fan of classic television, particularly westerns and The Andy Griffith Show .

Family meant everything to Phillip. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his grandson, taking him fishing, exploring caves, and going on little adventures together. He valued time with loved ones and friends and was always ready for a good conversation or a new outing.

Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Noah Wimmer, and mother, Evelyn Lewis Wimmer.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Wimmer; two stepdaughters, Rebecca Lee and Felicia Thompson (Erroll); three grandchildren, Christopher Hardison (Angela), Larkin Thompson, and Joyce Pickette (Terry); six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Virgil Wimmer (Ann) and Lannie Wimmer (Rita). He also leaves behind many beloved friends, including Mike Harmin, Gary White, Jesse Honaker, and Danny Thompson, along with many others whose lives he touched over the years.

Phillip will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his love for family, and the many memories he created with those who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held at Frost Funeral Home Chapel in Abingdon, Virginia, on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Erroll Thompson and Pastor Charles Perkins officiating.
