Obituary

After a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, Marvin N. Hurd passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on February 27, 2026, at home.

Born in Russell County in 1952, Marvin was the youngest of 8 siblings He was lifelong resident of Glade Spring and Meadowview. He met his soulmate, Shirley Alexander, at Patrick Henry High School. They eloped as teenagers and were inseparable partners for 53 years... like two puzzle pieces snuggly adjoined in life.

When you saw one, you saw the other. Marvin and Shirley did everything together from gardening and canning, making apple butter in a copper kettle, restoring the family farmhouse, hunting, fishing, chopping firewood, preparing family meals, hosting family cookouts/reunions, and everything else in between.

Marvin was the epitome of a "hard working man", laboring many days from dawn to dusk. Because there was always something to be accomplished, he was rarely idle in his healthier years. He spent most of his jack-of-all-trades career with the Washington County School Maintenance Department for 30 plus years.

Marvin's family, friends, and neighbors knew he was always just a phone call away for fixing whatever was broken or selflessly lending a helping hand. He lived by the principle "help thy neighbor".

Marvin's passions included woodworking, watching old westerns, hunting, fishing, attending auctions, raising Bobwhite quail and chickens and selling their eggs, beekeeping, vegetable gardening (especially tomatoes), playing Bingo and attending Greenfield Baptist Church. And most importantly, loving his faithful feline friend, Little Bit a.k.a. "Sissy", who spent many years nestled in his lap and loyally guarded by his bedside until the end.

Marvin will be heartbreakingly missed by his wife, Shirley, daughter Vikki (David) Widener, son Ricky (Christie) Hurd, four grandchildren Cody (Kailin), Chase (Alyssa), Troy, and Ainsley, and several nieces and nephews.

Marvin is also survived by his four sisters Doris Hurd, Mary Phibbs, Linda Yarber, and Maxie (Haynes) Hayden. He is preceded in death by his parents, Oliver "Perk" and Fannie "Kate" Hurd, one son, Israel Hurd, and brothers Gene, Ernest, and Jack Hurd.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, Virginia. A graveside service will be held at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, Virginia at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 5, 2026, with Pastor Dan Birchfield officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 A.M.
