Joseph “Joe” Hall Hutton of Abingdon, VA, passed away peacefully on June 6th, 2026. Joe loved Abingdon and being an active member of the community.
Joe spent his early childhood in Damascus, VA then moved to Marion, VA where he spent his busy high school years. He was a graduate of Marion Senior High School Class of 1963. He was in leadership and played football and basketball. He claimed his high school years were some of the best years of his life. He went on to be an integral part of MSH reunions for the rest of his life. He attended Wytheville Community College and received his bachelor’s degree at Virginia Tech in 1968. Joe and his wife continued to be avid Virginia Tech Football fans throughout their lives. Joe moved to the Abingdon area in 1977 and was very involved in the community. His occupation was insurance sales/ownership, which he loved just as much as golf, fishing, bird hunting, dancing and helping his wife on Dream Hill Farm. He was active with Rotary for years, participated on the WA County Planning Commission, served on the WA County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and served on the Glenrochie Country Club Board of Directors. Joe received many community honors over his lifetime including the Barry Firebaugh Leadership Award in Washington County.
Joe was preceded in death by Suzanne Moore Hutton, his devoted wife of 47 years, parents Hugh and Creola Hutton, and his brothers Ron, Jim and Bobbie Hutton. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Candice Wheeler, son-in-law Michael Wheeler, grandsons Hutton & Jackson Wheeler; sisters-in-law Betty Hutton, Phyllis Hutton & Jenny Moore; nieces/nephews Cynthia Ferrell & Ronnie Hutton, Chris & Vicki Hutton; special friend of the family Delana Jones.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 25th from 3:00-5:00pm at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon, VA. The family welcomes all friends and acquaintances!
The family extends their many thanks for the loving care during Joe’s illness; all the caregivers who cared for Joe at home, MSA Hospice and Commonwealth Senior Living. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kirk Edward Nairn Memorial Scholarship on their website (www.4knscholarship.com) or by mail (PO Box 1242, Abingdon, VA 24212).
