Obituary

John Wayne Snodgrass, walked through the Pearly Gates straight into the arms of our Jesus on Friday, June 19th surrounded by his family. Formally of Bristol VA. After retirement, John and Darlene moved to the country, in the Friendship community of Chilhowie VA.

John was born on June 14, 1945, in Abingdon, VA. He was the oldest son of the late John Guy Snodgrass and Olivine Crabtree Snodgrass of Meadowview, VA.

With John’s passing, we remember a life filled with love, kindness and joy.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy before settling down in Bristol, Virgina where he was a banker for over 30 years. Always willing to lend a helping hand and a smile, John never met a stranger.

He spent years coaching Little League, Junior and Senior League baseball with his best friends Randy Campbell and Norsalus “Squeaky” Black. He also served as President of Eastern Little League and was a mentor to countless athletes over the years.

In addition, he was a member of many civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Shriners and AIC.

John was a charter member at Antioch Baptist Church. He served many years as the Treasure at Antioch. His church life was filled with some of his best friends, with many now deceased. He especially enjoyed the senior trips.

John was a devoted father to his four children, spending his free time with his family. He also enjoyed spending time at the beach, watching westerns and all sports. He found his greatest peace later in life in the hours spent working out in his garden, driving his pickup truck and spending time with his seven grandchildren.

John’s legacy of kindness, strength and laughter will be carried forward by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to John’s parents, he is preceded in death by his mother and father in-law Willard Doss, SR and Lavaun Sullivan Doss. His youngest brother, Ron Snodgrass, and infant baby sister, Betty Jo Snodgrass, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Doss.

He is survived by the love of his life, Darlene Doss Snodgrass for 57 years. His children that he adored. One daughter, Angela Harman/Dr, Eric Harman of Bristol, TN. Three sons, Michael Sullivan/Lori of Winston Salem, NC, Steven Snodgrass of Wilmington, NC and John Guy Snodgrass II of Chilhowie, VA

John was also cherished by his seven grandchildren, Gabrielle Harman, Tiffany Sullivan, Gavin Harman, Drake Sullivan. Kolby Snodgrass, Gwyneth Harman, and Lexi Sullivan.

One brother, Barry Snodgrass/Nancy of Roanoke, VA. Two brothers-in-law. Tom Doss/Pam, Marion, VA and Willard Doss JR/Susan of Glade Spring, VA. His former sister-in-law, Linda Wright-Jernigan of Grey, TN

Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive

A celebration of life will be held at Antioch Baptist Church at 190 Salem Dr., Bristol, Virginia 24201 on Friday, June 26, 2026. Friends and family may visit from 6:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with the service to follow at 7:00 P.M.
