Janet Ann Hayter, 83, a longtime resident of Abingdon, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Born June 24, 1942, in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Russell L. Schultz and Anna Ryan Schultz. She spent her formative years in Jacksonville, Florida, and later embraced life as a military spouse. One of her earliest cherished memories in this new chapter was sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge en route to Japan—a journey that marked the beginning of three years abroad with her young family.

Janet was a voracious reader with a wide range of interests. She found joy in gardening and had a special fondness for small, vulnerable animals.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Robert Browning Hayter, and her son, Robert Browning Hayter, Jr.

She is survived by her son, James Hayter and his wife, Eileen, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Walker Hayter of New York City and Caroline Hayter of Chapel Hill.
