Obituary

George Wayne “Pop” Brooks, 85, of Bristol, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 25, 2026, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on May 18, 1941, in Chilhowie, Virginia, Pop was a man who found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He grew up with a deep love for baseball and believed there was nothing better than watching a Dodgers game. Whether cheering on his favorite team, watching racing, or sharing stories around the table, Pop treasured every moment spent with his family.

Pop worked for Reynolds/Ball Corporation for 24 years, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication.

He was known for his kind soul, generous heart, and ever-present smile. He loved nothing more than a good meal, a piece of coconut cake, bluegrass music, and being surrounded by those he loved most. His warmth and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew him, and he lived a wonderful 85 years filled with love, laughter, and devotion to his family.

He shared 49 loving years of marriage with his wife, Donna Dancy Brooks. Together they built a beautiful life and raised two sons, Mark Brooks and wife Laura, and Mike Brooks and wife Janie.

Pop was preceded in death by his parents, George Allen Brooks and Cartha Croy, his stepfather, Joe Croy; and his wife Donna Dancy.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Mark and Mike; two daughters-in-law Laura and Janie; his beloved granddaughters, Abby and Sarah Brooks; and his faithful furry companion, Whitey Jones.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Pop’s loving neighbors, Ben and Renee Moretz, the Widener family, the Taylor family, and the Isley family, as well as Elite Hospice and the Cancer Center for the compassionate care and kindness shown during this difficult time.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2026, from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, Virginia, with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 P.M. A committal service will follow in procession to Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Chilhowie, Virginia.
