Obituary

Frances Cox Baumgardner, age 94, of Abingdon, Virginia, received her promotion to Heaven on September 14, 2026.

At the time of her death, she was residing with her sister, Mary Thomas, in Chilhowie, Virginia. She was the oldest living member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church, where she had attended for 76 years.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie H. Cox, Jr., and Ora Kitzmiller Cox; her husband, Murphy R. Baumgardner; her son, Gary R. Baumgardner; and her daughter, Nancy B. Widener, all of Abingdon, Virginia. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Josie Gross, Ruth Williams, Ann Flick, and brother, Junior H. Cox; as well as her son-in-law, Carroll W. Cope.

Those left to cherish Frances’s memory include her daughter, Kathy B. Cope of Sevierville, Tennessee; granddaughter, Regina W. Mason (Michael); great-granddaughter, Kinsey M. Faris (Jared); and great-great-granddaughter, Kollyns Faris, all of Bristol, Virginia. She is also survived by her sisters, Jessie Cook (Doug) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Betty Norris of Bristol, Tennessee; Mary Thomas of Chilhowie, Virginia; and Shirley Rickson of Jonesborough, Tennessee; and her brother, Donald Cox (JoAnn) of Brunswick, Ohio. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Harry L. Widener of Abingdon, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, Virginia.

Funeral services for Frances Cox Baumgardner will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church on Denton Valley Road in Abingdon, Virginia, with former Pastor Rex Mallory officiating, assisted by Pastor Junior Gobble. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Fritz, Matthew Thompson, Michael Mason, Jared Faris, David Norris, and Michael Norris.

A special “thank you” is extended to her caregivers, Mary Thomas and Jessica Frye, along with Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia. The family would also like to thank Dr. Jonathan Swank for his many years of care as Frances’s primary care physician.
