Obituary

Elwood Thomas passed away peacefully at his home on August 7, 2026 at the age of 92. He was born May 26, 1934 in Letcher County Kentucky to Grover Cleveland and Martha Jane Duty Thomas. His life journey began in the beautiful mountains of Buchanan County. He had many hobbies including operating a sawmill, small grocery store and owner-operator of a small coal mine. He enjoyed coal mining and was apart of the rich coal mining culture in Southwest Virginia that was a way of life.

In 1977, he moved to Meadowview Virginia. For 50 years he was afforded many opportunities in dairy farming, tobacco harvesting, horseback trail riding and a steward of cattle and livestock. He dearly loved the hay season and could hardly wait for the morning dew to dissipate from the hay to begin cutting. After a hard day’s work, he could be found sitting in the big wooden swing under the maple tree watching the cows grazing near the barn.

Elwood loved a good laugh and enjoyed a good joke on someone, even himself. He was warm and friendly to so many and has touched many lives in his 92 years. His love, laughter and presence will remain in our hearts forever.

Elwood’s faith guided his life. He was a devoted Christian and member of the Abingdon Church of Christ. He married Jean Hall Thomas and cherished their 61 years together building a life full of love and family.

In addition to his parents, Elwood was preceded in death by his wife Jean in June of 2017; Brothers: Homer Thomas and Ernest Thomas and sisters Gertrude Thomas and Mamie Lou Lee; Son-In-Law Richard Stevens, Grandchildren: Clinton Cook, Steven Clifton, Travis Baumgardner and Lauren Baumgardner.

Elwood leaves behind four daughters: Linda Clifton (Ken); Sue Mullins (Steve); Debbie Baumgardner (Mike) and Jeannie Stevens; Grandchildren: Chad Mullins (Andrea), Travis Mullins Carla Cook, Canaan Stevens (Jennifer), Ashley Williams (Andrew) and McKenzie Stevens; three great grandchildren: Jacob Mullins, Ellison Mullins and Audrey Stevens.
